the story set on cybertron, home planet of transformers. has been several centuries since cybertron s golden age of space exploration , planetary colonisation, , society has declined stagnation. every space bridge has gone offline due years of neglect, contact other planets transformers colonised during golden age has been lost. when new transformer born of sparks (which contains allspark, device creates new transformers), assigned caste , guild may never deviate. castes separated hierarchy, highest castes relating science , politics, while lower castes given manual labourers in factories , mines. in lowest castes not given individual names.

in industrial city of kaon, gladiatorial combat grows in popularity among lower castes. 1 of gladiators - labourer opposes caste system , calls himself megatronus after 1 of original thirteen transformers - rises power , becomes local celebrity due skills in gladiatorial pits. megatronus fans , followers shorten name megatron in chants, , name sticks. in iacon (cybertron s capital city), clerk named orion pax - works in cybertron s hall of records , dislikes caste system - begins watching megatron s political speeches, finding championing of free cybertron each individual determining own path in life highly appealing. orion turns guidance supervisor , mentor alpha trion, encourages him meet megatron, cryptically stating great destiny awaits them both.

orion travels kaon , meets megatron in person, along 2 of followers, shockwave , soundwave. orion , megatron engage in intense friendly debates on nature of free will, , find broad agreement in need new form of cybertronian government. however, megatron favours confrontation , revolution, while orion hopes inspire masses change system within. megatron s political movement gains power, grows more violent. terrorists professing allegiance him commit multiple bombings across cybertron. megatron repeatedly states in public speeches not know terrorists , did not orchestrate these attacks. terrorists attack casino in city of altihex, sentinel prime (the main political leader of cybertron) attending show. when bombings start, sentinel relies on 3 bodyguards - starscream, skywarp , thundercracker - escort him safety. however, bodyguards instead take sentinel kaon , present him megatron. starscream flirts joining megatron s forces, sees sentinel potential bargaining chip , not allow megatron kill him, ordering skywarp , thundercracker take him trypticon station, scientific space station orbits cybertron.

the great war

to prevent all-out war, alpha trion helps orion , megatron secure audience before cybertron high council in order plead case. council hostile notion of change , view megatron criminal. megatron continues disown terrorist attacks continues appeal total removal of caste system, including council itself. words supported lower castes in council s audience, have started calling decepticons . contrast, orion makes more noble appeal council. proclaims transformer s fuller potential race if each individual acknowledged autonomous robot, using ancient term autobot expression of ideal. impressed orion s morals, council appoint him new leader of cybertron, giving him new name , title: optimus prime. however, orion s sudden elevation outrages megatron, believes situation set-up. kills council member, crowd marshals war optimus prime manages convince him not commit further violence within council halls. 2 sides retreat halls , begin war cybertron.

the war brutal , largely one-sided; autobots retain control of 2 cities, iacon , kalis, while decepticons take on rest of planet. out of desperation, autobots launch allspark space. megatron orders starscream give him access trypticon station s stockpile of dark energon, power-enhancing substance. decepticons consume dark energon , become extremely powerful, gaining combat edge , overwhelming struggling autobots. megatron seeks control of plasma energy chamber @ cybertron s core, planning flood dark energon, permanently empower own forces while poisoning cybertron , starving autobots death. murders sentinel prime , steals key chamber, before can access it, autobots reactivate omega supreme, enormous robot transforms both rocket ship , city. omega supreme takes plasma energy chamber , attempts fly safety, starscream leads aerial assault shoots him down, , after megatron empowers himself dark energon, effortlessly defeats autobots , omega s robot mode. floods chamber dark energon , sends cybertron s core.

as dark energon flows throughout cybertron, optimus prime ventures core fix chamber, accompanied autobots bumblebee , jetfire. once find it, bumblebee extracts chamber, stopping flow of dark energon, , optimus receives mental communication core itself, in fact spark of primus, creator of cybertron , transformers. primus states able heal himself, process take centuries, , in mean time unable generate enough energon sustain population does, cause cybertron become cold , barren, transformers either have abandon cybertron or risk starvation. primus bestows optimus matrix of leadership, contains collective wisdom of past cybertronian leaders. optimus orders mass exodus of autobot army, of ships shot down trypticon station. 1 ship, 8 track, able link station , force crash cybertron. falls, however, station transforms enormous, reptilian monster , goes on rampage.

the great exodus

alpha trion grows ever more despairing cybertron, , sets radical plan motion: construction of largest spaceship in cybertronian history, ark, on of autobots may escape. several autobots - including alpha trion, jetfire, , newly repaired omega supreme - volunteer stay on cybertron , protect little territory autobots still hold. of autobots flee ark, megatron commands trypticon transform equally large spaceship, nemesis, in , of decepticons give pursuit. ark takes off space, , nemesis pursues. fly last intact space bridge, because no 1 alive knows how use it, there no guarantee work. 2 giant spaceships within range of space bridge, indeed activate , teleports them uncharted part of space. no decepticons in sight, ark detects energy allspark. optimus prime orders ark pilots follow signal, , autobot s adventure in space begins.
