the motorway had beginning single-carriageway part of reichsautobahn 9 (berlin-breslau) built germany in 1930s, completed between 1936 , 1938. route had features of autobahn, built according standards of time, including exits, viaducts , bridges, except single carriageway constructed along of length , space left constructing second carriageway @ later time. road existed in state until 1990s, when first 7 km (4.3 mi) @ eastern end rebuilt new concrete carriageways. in 1995, 7 km stretch @ western end modernised addition of second carriageway.

from 2004 onward, construction work has been progressively carried out upgrade whole stretch modern standards, can officially designated autostrada in entirety. between 2004 , 2006, missing, northern carriageway completed in whole length , of overpasses , bridges reconstructed. june 2007, road had 2 carriageways in use. however, older of 2 (carrying eastbound traffic towards wrocław) in poor shape, still has surface made of concrete slabs laid in 1930s. due poor road conditions, speed on carriageway limited 70 km/h.

the next stage of reconstruction has not started of 2014, previous polish government did not envisage starting in immediate future. delay in completing upgrade caused, in part, changes in motorway project required new environmental protection rules (a18 passes through natura 2000 protected areas). on 15 july 2010, environmental impact decision revised project issued, have allowed contract bidding procedure completed , construction start in 2011. in december 2010, polish government announced significant cutbacks funding road construction, delayed project years. during final stage of reconstruction, traffic shifted northern carriageway , southern carriageway demolished , rebuilt. work not completed before 2020.
