smith born in kirkwood, missouri, grew , lived of life in panama city, florida. served in united states navy hospital corpsman aboard uss peleliu in san diego, california, , honorably discharged after 5 years of service. learned scuba dive while working florida state university s underwater crime scene investigation program. smith graduated fsu b.s. degree in underwater crime scene investigation in 2005. subsequently worked commercial diver miracle strip welding & marine services , rme-diver in panama city beach, florida.

smith joined aquarius, owned national oceanic , atmospheric administration (noaa) , operated university of north carolina wilmington, in 2007. worked habitat technician , undersea research diver. part of work aquarius, smith answered questions schoolchildren.

in august 2007, smith took part habitat technician in nasa extreme environment mission operations 13 (neemo 13) mission, 1 of series of nasa-noaa missions use aquarius analog environment space exploration. neemo 13 crew lived , worked underwater aboard aquarius ten days.
