zodiacal light seen green , red orionid meteor striking sky below milky way , right of venus


in mid-latitudes, zodiacal light best observed in western sky in spring after evening twilight has disappeared, or in eastern sky in autumn before morning twilight appears. zodiacal light appears column, brighter @ horizon, tilted @ angle of ecliptic. light scattered extremely small dust particles forward scattering, although zodiacal light extends way around sky, hence brightest when observing @ small angle sun. why visible near sunrise or sunset, when sun blocked, dust particles nearest line of sight sun not. dust band causes zodiacal light uniform across whole ecliptic.


the dust further ecliptic undetectable except when viewed @ small angle sun. possible see more of width @ small angles toward sun, , appears wider near horizon, closer sun under horizon.
