m1 frangible grenade (ac, cns , m1)

in september 1942 united states standardized molotov cocktail-style device nominally designated grenade . consisted of pint-sized clear glass bottle crimped metal cap. dubbed frangible because made of glass, brittle , broken.


the m1 grenade filled of number of chemical compounds depending upon effect required, in both lethal , non-lethal combinations. fillers liquid compounds selected because activated exposure air, not requiring detonator. ac filler (hydrocyanic acid) blood agent. cns (chloracetophenone solution) tear gas made cn gas (chloracetophenone) dissolved in chlorpicrin , chloroform. m1 (b chlorvinyldichlorarsine, or lewisite ) liquid turned powerful vesicant gas upon exposure chemically burned surfaces of exposed skin , lungs.


m6/a1, m7/a1/a2/a3 , m54

the m6/m7 series cylindrical riot control grenades, variety of fillers, including cn, cs, , dm. dm substance causes burning sensation in nose , throat , heavy tight feeling in chest, accompanied nauseating effect. of these weapons burning type grenades work burning filler , emitting resulting smoke through holes in body. m6/a1 filled cn-dm, m7/a1 cn, m7a2 (also written abc-m7a2) cs, , m7a3 (also written abc-m7a3) cs in pelletized rather gelatin capsule form. m7a2 , m7a3 have 3 emission holes on top , 1 on bottom, m6 , m7 have 6 emission holes on top , 1 on bottom, , m6a1 , m7a1 have 4 emission holes on top , 1 on bottom. m54 variant of m7 series designed dropped aerial launchers.


m25/a1/a2

a spherical riot control grenade, m25/a1 (also written abc-m25/a1) filled cn. grenade of plastic construction , bursting type. m25a2 featured improved body construction, , later models filled cs (and possibly dm) rather cn.

xm47/e1/e2/e3

a rubber ball riot control grenade, xm47 series known skittering grenades, gas burned internally , vented through ports in grenade body, in effect making grenade spin erratically. designed make harder target or targets retrieve , throw grenade. xm47e3 filled cs, information on other variants scarce. safe assume @ least 1 filled cn, , others might have filler in different solid forms. xm47e3 standardized m47.
