the 1961 ambassador continued previous year s 117-inch (2,972 mm) basic unitized platform, received unusual new front-end styling overseen amc s in-house design department headed edmund anderson. new face consisted of trapezoid grille , headlights floated in body-colored panel, while front fenders arched downward , forward of leading edge of hood. different else on market, amc s marketing department promoted european. while new meant distinguish ambassador lower-priced ramblers, neither consumer success nor received in automotive press. overall sales fell entire industry experiencing recession. hardtop sedan , wagon models did not return 1961.


standard 250 hp (186 kw; 253 ps) 327 cu in (5.4 l) v8 synchromesh manual transmission. optional 270 hp (201 kw; 274 ps) power pack version dual exhaust system featuring new ceramic-coated mufflers guaranteed life of car.
