Signs and symptoms Thrombophilia

the common conditions associated thrombophilia deep vein thrombosis (dvt) , pulmonary embolism (pe), referred collectively venous thromboembolism (vte). dvt occurs in legs, , characterized pain, swelling , redness of limb. may lead long-term swelling , heaviness due damage valves in veins. clot may break off , migrate (embolize) arteries in lungs. depending on size , location of clot, may lead sudden-onset shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations , may complicated collapse, shock , cardiac arrest.


venous thrombosis may occur in more unusual places: in veins of brain, liver (portal vein thrombosis , hepatic vein thrombosis), mesenteric vein, kidney (renal vein thrombosis) , veins of arms. whether thrombophilia increases risk of arterial thrombosis (which underlying cause of heart attacks , strokes) less established.


thrombophilia has been linked recurrent miscarriage, , possibly various complications of pregnancy such intrauterine growth restriction, stillbirth, severe pre-eclampsia , abruptio placentae.


protein c deficiency may cause purpura fulminans, severe clotting disorder in newborn leads both tissue death , bleeding skin , other organs. condition has been described in adults. protein c , protein s deficiency have been associated increased risk of skin necrosis on commencing anticoagulant treatment warfarin or related drugs.
