History Andriyivskyy Descent

the descent, located between 2 hills, shortest passageway historic old or upper town (ukrainian: Князівська Гора; kniazivs’ka hora) commercial podil neighborhood. 1 of hills, known uzdyhal’nytsia, place pre-christian idols once stood (see: baptism of kiev), , hill, called zamkova hora, served castle hill during middle ages. many centuries, passageway steep , inconvenient, s reason why there not settlements long time. first buildings erected here in 17th century, , first apartment buildings began appearing towards end of 19th century.


in 1711, order of then-governor of kiev, route between zamkova , andriyivskyy mountains expanded, allowing traffic become more suitable horses , wagon carriages. andriyivskyy descent renamed in 1920 in honor of young revolutionary georgiy liver. in 1944, decided return street prior name; in 1957, street renamed andreevsky spusk—the russian variant of andriyivskyy descent. in 1980s, andriyivskyy descent received thorough reconstruction after years of disrepair.


on april 9, 2012, construction workers began demolishing legally protected historic structures, though earlier year, safety guaranteed @ several news conferences , buildings included in scale models of renovated descent. destruction of buildings took place under guise of reconstruction efforts, began in october 2011. preliminary reports indicate buildings directly across from, , next museum of bulgakov, (buildings 10a, 10b, , 9/11) razed ground. land being redeveloped make room new office , business complex house rinat akhmetov s kyiv operations.


several hundred protestors, including boxer/politician vitali klitschko, gathered outside main kyiv office of akhmetov’s scm holdings. on april 12, akhmetov claimed had canceled plans build multi-story business center in buildings’ place, promising instead build cultural center , restore facades.
