everything suggests completed training gonzales coques, leading painter of portraits , history paintings known nickname de kleine van dyck ( little van dyck ). thijs continued working in coques workshop more 3 years after becoming master of antwerp guild of st. luke in 1644–45. presence of collection of george villiers, 1st duke of buckingham, in antwerp, thijs able study paintings of cinquecento.


after leaving coques workshop thijs started out on career successful despite prevailing dire economic situation in antwerp. maintained busy workshop employed twenty apprentices in course of career. in 1660s had enough work keep 6 assistants busy. obtained many commissions altarpieces in churches in flanders , brabant portraits, , allegorical , mythological paintings patrons in both southern netherlands , dutch republic. through international business connections of father-in-law ran large import-export business in antwerp offices in major ports , cities of europe, able sell paintings international clientele , commissions altarpieces in vienna , croatia cologne cathedral.

thijs enjoyed royal patronage. 1647 onwards, became portrait painter tapestry designer archduke leopold wilhelm of austria, governor of southern netherlands, while @ same time taking on commissions rival house of orange in hague. collaborated on decorations in huis honselaarsdijk, palace of frederick henry, prince of orange near hague (now lost).


thijs married constantia van der beken on 19 march 1648. couple had 6 daughters , 4 sons. son pieter pauwel thijs (1652-1679) followed in footsteps artist died young. after death of first wife married anna bruydegom on 2 july 1670.


thijs played major role in antwerp’s cultural life. served deacon , treasurer of antwerp guild of saint luke , driving force behind further development of chamber of rhetoric violieren of guild. able persuade local playwright willem ogier compose several works theater.


thijs trained son pieter pauwel , teacher of jan fransicus lauwereyssens.
