mers implicated in outbreak in april 2014 in saudi arabia, mers has infected 688 people , 282 mers-related deaths have been reported since 2012. in response newly reported cases , deaths, , resignation of 4 doctors @ jeddah’s king fahd hospital refused treat mers patients fear of infection, government has removed minister of health , set 3 mers treatment centers. eighteen more cases reported in may. in june 2014, saudi arabia announced 113 unreported cases of mers, revising death toll 282.

a hospital-related outbreak in riyadh in summer of 2015 increased fears of epidemic occurring during annual hajj pilgrimage begins in late september. after period of few cases, cases began increasing in middle of summer. cdc placed travel health alert level 2, calls taking enhanced precautions.

united states

on 2 may 2014, centers disease control , prevention (cdc) confirmed first diagnosis of mers in united states @ community hospital in munster indiana. man diagnosed health care worker had been in saudi arabia week earlier, , reported in condition. second patient traveled saudi arabia reported in orlando, florida on 12 may 2014. on 14 may 2014, officials in netherlands reported first case has appeared. on saturday, 17 may 2014, man illinois business associate of first u.s. case (he had met , shook hands indiana health care worker) tested positive mers coronavirus, has not, of yet, displayed symptoms (others also, @ least temporarily if not permanently, non-symptomatic carriers). cdc s dr. david swerdlow, leading agency s response, said man, feels , has not yet sought , not yet need medical care, has not been deemed official case yet , prevention guidelines have not changed. laboratory tests showed evidence of past infection in blood.

south korea

2015 mers outbreak in south korea

in may 2015, first case in south korea confirmed in man had visited saudi arabia, united arab emirates , bahrain. man south korea, travelling china, diagnosed first case in china. far, no chinese citizen has been found infected.

as of 27 june 2015, 19 people in south korea have died outbreak, 184 confirmed cases of infection. there have been @ least 6508 quarantined.

philippines

in april 2014, mers emerged in philippines suspected case of home-bound overseas filipino worker (ofw). several suspected cases involving individuals on same flight initial suspected case being tracked believed have dispersed throughout country. suspected mers-involved death in sultan kudarat province caused department of health (doh) put out alert. on 6 july 2015 doh confirmed second case of mers in philippines. 36-year-old male foreigner middle east tested positive.

united kingdom

on 27 july 2015, accident , emergency department @ manchester royal infirmary closed after 2 patients treated suspected mers virus. facility reopened later evening, , later confirmed public health england 2 patients had in fact tested negative disease.

kenya

in january 2016 larger outbreak of mers among camels in kenya reported. of 5 february 2016 more 500 camels said have died of disease. on 12 february 2016 disease reported mers. there of 12 february 2016 no known human cases. antibodies though have been shown in healthy humans in kenya according 1 study.
