the dutch biographer arnold houbraken wrote lucas franchoys known portraits , historical allegories, in hand of peter paul rubens recognized. however, franchoys style more closely linked of anthony van dyck of rubens.


through many monumental altarpieces in churches in tournai , in mechelen franchoys built reputation 1 of leading religious painters of second half of 17th century. these works show influence of later works of anthony van dyck, after franchoys made several etchings , whom collaborated. franchoys tends emphasize emotionality in religious iconography. style in paintings time in tournai not mature , suffers cramped composition , painting of robust figures. later works painted in mechelen display more effective composition of figures , more expressiveness in poses. in later work franchoys shows strong similarity work of pieter thijs, contemporary working under influence of van dyck.
