dos not multitasking operating system. dos did provide terminate , stay resident (tsr) function allowed programs remain resident in memory. these programs hook system timer and/or keyboard interrupts allow run tasks in background or invoked @ time preempting current running program implementing simple form of multitasking on program-specific basis. print command did implement background print spooling. borland sidekick, popup personal information manager (pim), used technique.


terminate , stay resident programs used provide additional features not available default. programs ced , doskey provided command line editing facilities beyond available in command.com. programs microsoft cd-rom extensions (mscdex) provided access files on cd-rom disks.


some tsrs perform rudimentary form of task switching. example, shareware program , forth (1990) had hotkey save state of currently-running program disk, load program, , switch it, hence possible switch , forth between programs, albeit due disk access required. , forth not enable background processing however; needed desqview (on @ least 386).
