the partition of british india on 15 august 1947 led creation of 2 sovereign states, both dominions: pakistan (which later split islamic republic of pakistan , people s republic of bangladesh in 1971) , india (later republic of india) india received 82.5% of total munitions, arms, , transport combined military of raj, , 70% of manpower.


since 1920s indian independence movement had been demanding poorna swaraj (complete self-rule) indian nation , establishment of dominion of india , dominion of pakistan major victory swarajis. nevertheless, partition controversial among people, , resulted in significant political instability , displacement.

most of 552 princely states within indian territory acceded dominion of india due work of civil servant v. p. menon. hindu-majority junagadh state located in modern-day gujarat attempted accede pakistan under muslim nawab muhammad mahabat khanji iii. annexed militarily indian government. similarly, state of hyderabad sought remain independent , annexed india in 1948.
