brian k. vaughan hired write screenplay marvel studios in may 2008, based on comic creation runaways. in april 2010, marvel hired peter sollett direct film, , month later drew pearce signed on write new script. development on film put on hold following october, , pearce explained in september 2013 runaways film had been shelved due success of avengers; earliest film made phase 3 of marvel cinematic universe. in october 2014, after announcing marvel s phase 3 films without runaways, marvel studios president kevin feige said project still awesome script exists in our script vault... in our television , future film discussions, s 1 talk about, because have solid draft there. in february 2017, marvel announced casting of runaways, rhenzy feliz alex wilder, lyrica okano nico minoru, virginia gardner karolina dean, ariela barer gert yorkes, gregg sulkin chase stein, , allegra acosta molly hernandez. shortly after, marvel announced casting of pride, ryan sands geoffrey wilder, angel parker catherine wilder, brittany ishibashi tina minoru, james yaegashi robert minoru, kevin weisman dale yorkes, brigid brannagh stacey yorkes, annie wersching leslie dean, kip pardue frank dean, james marsters victor stein, , ever carradine janet stein. loeb praised casting director patrick rush, explaining of series regulars runaways producers first choice role. majority of children portrayed fresh faces , intentional choice.

filming

filming on pilot began february 10, 2017, in los angeles, under working title rugrats, , concluded on march 3. director brett morgen given free rein marvel , hulu establish of series, , wanted create feel grounded , authentic . looked differentiate between hand-held, gritty world of runaways , more stylistic world of pride. felt latter explored more in series moving forward, not available direct more episodes of season. following completion of pilot , show s pick-up series, there concern among cast , crew impending writers strike prevent series move forward. however, strike did not happen, , filming on rest of season began @ end of june, again in los angeles. production on season had concluded october 21.

old lace, genetically engineered deinonychus telepathically linked gert yorkes, appears in series. dinosaur rendered through use of puppet operated 6 people, including 1 person pumping air through puppet show dinosaur breathing. barer called puppet incredible ... see emotions. don t not make use of that.

music

in may 2017, siddhartha khosla hired compose music series. khosla said that, due history songwriter, scoring process involves working on these song-stories , weaving them through different episodes . described runaways score being synthesized , utilizing analog synthesizers 1980s, roland juno-60 , oberheim electronics synths. khosla compared alternative feel of score depeche mode, adding there element of rebellion, sonically going little bit outside box, non-traditional, felt appropriate approach. feel i’m making art on show. alex patsavas serves music supervisor, having done on of schwartz , savage s previous series.
