Political career Evelyn Denison, 1st Viscount Ossington
a whig, became member of parliament (mp) newcastle-under-lyme in 1823, being returned hastings 3 years later, , holding short time subordinate position in george canning s ministry. defeated in 1830 both @ newcastle-under-lyme , @ liverpool, denison secured seat 1 of members nottinghamshire in 1831. after great reform act represented southern division of nottinghamshire 1832 until general election of 1837. appointed high sheriff of nottinghamshire 1839–40.
denison represented malton 1841 1857, , north nottinghamshire 1857 1872. in april 1857 denison chosen speaker of house of commons. sworn of privy council @ same time. re-elected @ beginning of 3 successive parliaments retained position until february 1872, when resigned , raised peerage viscount ossington, of ossington in county of nottingham. refused, however, accept pension given retiring speakers. denison gave explanation – referred speaker denison s rule – how speaker should exercise or casting vote in event of tie.
