it first described naturalist johann reinhold forster , son georg following discovery of norfolk island james cook on 10 october 1774. description published in 1844. around 1790, john hunter depicted bird on kangaroo apple (solanum aviculare). bird formally described john gould in 1836, specimen @ zoological society of london. originally, individuals norfolk island , philip island considered 2 separate species, nestor norfolcensis (described august von pelzeln in 1860) , nestor productus, respectively, direct comparison of specimens of both islands showed same species.
