salisbury: gloria victis ( glory defeated ), called fame confederate monument. cast in brussels in 1891, gloria victis 1 of 2 nearly-identical sculptures frederick ruckstull (the other being confederate soldiers , sailors monument, removed public display in baltimore in 2017). gloria victis appeared first @ exhibition in paris, , @ studio in new york city, purchased udc confederate monument salisbury. 23 ft (7.0 m) high bronze statue features allegorical angel outstretched wings dressed in robes laurel wreath on head. in 1 hand supports dying soldier holding battered rifle, while in other hand—held high—she holds second laurel wreath place on soldier when expires. anna morrison jackson, widow of confederate general stonewall jackson, attended 1909 dedication in salisbury.
