Little Landers W. E. Smythe



in 1908 formed corporation bought 700 acres of belcher ranch on u.s. side of tijuana river, shared mexico, , changed name of entire community san ysidro, after patron saint of farmers in spain.this first little landers colony, attracted 300 families promise. smythe lived there 1909 1911, overseeing market farmers set in san diego sell produce.


smythe began writing editorials in 1912 scripps newspapers, publisher, e.w. scripps, lived in san diego, , published little landers magazine. opened little landers colony called runnymede.


in 1913, m.v. hartranft, glendale, california, land developer utopianist ideas, joined smythe in forming little landers colony in tujunga, north of verdugo mountains in los angeles county.



the 2 men believed independent on small acreage irrigated , lovingly farmed… [they] joined in business ventures. smythe idealist of 2 , hartrantf businessman make ideas work.
