inside, main entrance located on short axis of church , directly faces high altar. oval form of main congregational space of church defined wall, pilasters , entablature, frame side chapels, , golden dome above. large paired columns supporting curved pediment differentiate recessed space of high altar congregational space.


in contrast dark side chapels, high altar niche lit hidden source , becomes main visual focus of lower part of interior. result, congregation become ‘witnesses’ theatrical narrative of st andrew begins in high altar chapel , culminates in dome. on high altar oil painting of martyrdom of saint andrew (1668) french painter guillaume courtois, depiction shows andrew tied diagonals of form of cross on crucified. andrew appears second time if breaking through curved pediment of edicule frame high altar; time represented white marble sculpture carved antonio raggi. shown on cloud, designating heavenly appearance, and, arm outstretched , gaze cast upwards, indicates on way heaven represented golden dome, stucco cherubim heads clustered around opening lantern, , lantern vault dove of holy ghost. dramatic visual narrative sustained not upwards through space of church employs different artistic modes. bernini combined painting, sculpture , architecture synthesis create visually idea of apotheosis of st andrew in spiritual theater. used similar synthesis of artistic modes in design of ecstasy of saint theresa in cornaro chapel of santa maria della vittoria. synthesis has been referred ‘unity of visual arts’.
