loaísa’s expedition


the expedition set sail corunna on july 24, 1525. consisted of 7 ships, santa maría de la victoria, sancti spiritus, anunciada, san gabriel, santa maría del parral , san lesmes , patache, santiago. de loaísa named captain along juan sebastián elcano, had reached spice islands in 1521 during magellan expedition.


the fleet headed southwest canary islands , south along african coastline. in november 1525 de loaísa moved west across atlantic brazil, reaching patagonian shore in january 1526. there no sign of trinidad, , de loaísa decided abandon search , continue instead spice islands. weather poor, , on next several weeks, in high winds while trying enter strait of magellan, ships alternately gathered , dispersed. 2 ships, sancti spiritus , anunciada wrecked, , one, san gabriel tacked atlantic , deserted expedition.
