in medicine transillumination refers transmission of light through tissues of body. common example transmission of light through fingers, producing red glow due red blood cells absorbing other wavelengths of light. organs analysed include sinuses, breasts , testes. used pediatricians shine light in bodies of infants , observe amount of scattered light. since skeleton not calcified, light can penetrate tissues. common examples of diagnostic applications are:


hydrocele

failed obliteration of processus vaginalis allows serous fluid collect around testes via communicating connection between tunica vaginalis , peritoneum. resulting hydrocele presents painless enlargement of scrotum, similar may encountered testicular neoplasms. convenient method differentiate conditions transilluminate scrotum, hydrocele appear soft red while solid tumor not transmit light. uncertainty should followed ultrasound.


hydrocephalus (water head)

light penetrates inside of skull of infant. if there excess of cerebrospinal fluid (csf), light scattered different parts of skull, producing patterns characteristic hydrocephalus. device used in operation chun gun uses 150 watt projection bulb light source.


pneumothorax (collapsed lungs)

bright light penetrates thin front chest wall , reflects off chest wall indicate degree of pneumothorax. treat it, physician inserts needle attached syringe area of collapse remove air between lungs , chest wall, causing lung reinflate.
