although turkey qualified 1950 world cup, beating syria 7–0, had withdraw due financial problems.

1954 fifa world cup

turkey qualified 1954 world cup after play-off spain. turkish team first lost 4–1 spain, 1–0 win few days later initiated replay. on occasion, tied 2–2 after, booking place after coin toss. turkey put in group along hungary , west germany. turks, however, never played hungary due tournament format, , 4–1 defeat germans followed turkey carrying out 7–0 win on south korea. turkey lost play-off west germany 7–2. in 1956, however, turkey did play hungary in friendly match in istanbul, defeating 1 of strongest teams of era, 3–1. lefter küçükandonyadis, arguably 1 of best turkish players of all-time, scored 2 goals during tournament.

1990–1996

in summer of 2003, turkey reached third place @ 2003 fifa confederations cup. in group stages, turkey defeated united states 2–1 before losing cameroon 0–1. in final group match, turkey drew 2–2 against brazil, eliminating them tournament. turkey lost eventual tournament winners france 3–2 in semi-final match. turkey defeated colombia 2–1 win bronze medal. tuncay Şanlı scored 3 goals , made assist, won him silver shoe award , silver ball award second best player of tournament.

2006 fifa world cup

the quarter-final against croatia goalless after 90 minutes, , croatia led 1–0 in final minute of time, late turkish goal forward semih Şentürk brought game penalties. goal raised controversy croatia fans , croatia head coach slaven bilić, claimed goal had been scored after time had elapsed. complaint, however, overruled, , game went penalties. turkey defeated croatia in penalties, 3–1.
