until 1970s, gabon had no railroads. 936 km railroad construction program, trans-gabon railway, began in october 1974. in first stage, completed in 1983, project linked port of owendo interior city of booué (332 km). second stage, completed in december 1986, linked booué franceville (357 km) via moanda, facilitating exports of manganese southeast , forestry exploitation in same region. proposed third stage continue line booué belinga in northeast, there iron ore deposits.
in 2003, railway began process of installing satellite based telecommunications system. of 2004, gabon state railways totalled 814 km of standard-gauge track.
