maharaja gulab singh, founder of princely state of jammu , kashmir


around 1808, jammu became part of sikh empire, under maharaja ranjit singh. ranjit singh in 1820, bestowed place jagir on gulab singh s father kishore singh, belonged jamwal rajput clan ruled jammu. jagirdar (governor) sikhs, gulab singh extended boundaries of sikh empire western tibet of fine general zorawar singh. sikh rule extended beyond jammu region , kashmir valley include tibetan buddhist kingdom of ladakh , emirates of hunza, gilgit , nagar.


in turmoil succession of sikh empire followed maharaja ranjit singh s death in 1839, 2 of gulab singh s sons udham singh, , sohan singh killed in feuding between sikh heirs. youngest brother suchet singh, killed own nephew hira singh, vizir (prime minister) of sikh empire. hira singh, great favourite of maharaja ranjit singh , gulab singh once aspired have him installed sikh emperor. hira singh had become prime minister aged 24, after father , gulab singh s brother vizir dhian singh assassinated in blotched september 1843 coup d état against sikh emperor sher singh in lahore. during regency of maharani jind kaur, hira singh killed sikh army in december 1844.


gulab singh, came possession of koh-i-noor diamond, after maharaja kharak singh s mysterious death in prison in 1840, , had presented famous stone maharaja sher singh win favour.


after first anglo-sikh war in 1846, sir henry lawrence appointed british resident , vizir lal singh on behalf of infant emperor duleep singh asked surrender kashmir. vizir lal singh dogra, , along gulab singh colluded british deliberately break sikh army , facilitate british victory.


under terms of treaty of amritsar followed in march 1846, british government sold kashmir sum of 7.5 million nanakshahee rupees gulab singh, hereafter bestowed title of maharaja. princely state of jammu , kashmir came being under maharaja gulab singh, per treaties, treaty of lahore, signed between british , sikhs.


maharaja partab singh (enthroned in 1885) saw construction of banihal cart road (b.c. road) facilitate telegraph services. during wwi provided 1 mountain battery , 3 infantry battalions fight british in east africa, palestine , mesopotamia. services of troops state awarded hereditary 21-guns salute.
