at age 16, kate ran away foster home , stowed away on riverboat bound st. louis, missouri. kate later claimed while lived in st. louis married dentist named silas melvin whom had son, , both died of yellow fever. no record has been found substantiate marriage, birth of child, or death of either melvin or child. united states census records report silas melvin lived in st. louis in mid 1860s married steamship captain s daughter named mary bust. census shows melvin employed st. louis asylum. since kate met doc holliday in 1870s, may have confused 2 , occupations when recalling facts later in life.
