the codex said have been found enclosed in wooden box in dry cave in highlands of chiapas near tortuguero; said have been found turquoise mask in collection of dumbarton oaks. in 1965 mexican collector dr. josué sáenz taken 2 men on light plane remote airstrip in foothills of sierra madre near tortuguero in tabasco state; compass of plane covered cloth sáenz recognized approximate location. @ airstrip shown codex along other looted maya artifacts , told take items mexico city authentication before purchasing them. antiquities expert sáenz consulted declared artifacts fakes sáenz later purchased codex , permitted michael coe display codex @ grolier club in 1971. in 1976, united states-mexico artifacts treaty of 1970 invoked attorney general of mexico. resulted in seizure of codex , return mexico. sáenz donated codex mexican government , kept in vault in museo nacional de antropología in mexico city , not on public display. claimed discovery of grolier codex make pre-columbian codex discovered in course of 20th century, except codex fragments excavated archaeologists.
