paper recycling in europe has long history. industry self-initiative european recovered paper council(erpc) set in 2000 monitor progress towards meeting paper recycling targets set out in 2000 european declaration on paper recycling. since then, commitments in declaration have been renewed every 5 years. in 2011, erpc committed meeting , maintaining both voluntary recycling rate target of 70% in e-27 plus switzerland , norway 2015 qualitative targets in areas such waste prevention, ecodesign , research , development. in 2014 paper recycling rate in europe 71.7%, stated in 2014 monitoring report.

municipal collections of paper recycling in place. however, according yomiuri shimbun, in 2008, 8 paper manufacturers in japan have admitted intentionally mislabeling recycled paper products, exaggerating amount of recycled paper used.


united states

recycling has long been practiced in united states. in 2012, paper , paperboard accounted 68 million tons of municipal solid waste generated in u.s., down more 87 million tons in 2000, according u.s. environmental protection agency. while paper commonly recycled material—64.6 percent recovered in 2012—it being used less overall @ turn of century. paper accounts more half of recyclables collected in us, weight.


the history of paper recycling has several dates of importance:



in 1690: first paper mill use recycled linen established rittenhouse family.
in 1896: first major recycling center started benedetto family in new york city, collected rags, newspaper, , trash pushcart.
in 1993: first year when more paper recycled buried in landfills.

today, on half of paper used in united states collected , recycled. paper products still largest component of municipal solid waste, making more 40% of composition of landfills. in 2006, record 53.4% of paper used in (53.5 million tons) recovered recycling, 1990 recovery rate of 33.5%. paper industry set goal of recovering 55 percent of paper used in 2012. paper products used packaging industry responsible 77% of packaging materials recycled, more 24 million pounds recovered in 2005.


by 1998, 9,000 curbside recycling programs , 12,000 recyclable drop-off centers existed nationwide. of 1999, 480 materials recovery facilities had been established process collected materials. recently, junk mail has become larger part of overall recycling stream, compared newspapers or personal letters. however, increase in junk mail still smaller compared declining use of paper sources.
